Let's pick on Barry some more

Now way back when, Hal Jordan and Barry Allen were the very bestest of friends. Hal however did have this rather bad habit of mooching off of Barry, but Barry, being a very nice man, didn't mind. Barry also had a nice young sidekick named Wally, aka Kid Flash. No, NOT Speedy, he belonged to Ollie. Although with a name like "Speedy" you'd think he'd be a Flash. This used to confuse the heck out of me in my considerably younger days.

Anyway,

Hal is doing his very best to impress Kid Flash. Hal always has to impress SOMEBODY, and there wasn't a woman around at that precise moment. And Barry doesn't mind, look, he's all smiles and rainbows. Of course later on, Kid Flash loses his powers trying to save Barry, and Hal jumps in and makes him a Jr. Green Lantern, which makes Wally very happy, and makes Barry a little sad. Why can't Hal go get his OWN sidekick? Eventually however, Wally gets his powers back, and tells Hal no thanks, and Barry and Wally are happy again. Happy happy happy. Hal probably wanders off to get laid or something.

I used to wonder that, too -- Why was Wally called "Kid Flash" and Roy called "Speedy?" Didn't make sense to me, either. I think it's hilarious that Roy is now called Red Arrow, because when I was a kid, I always thought that's what he should be called! After all, his costume was always RED, for crying out loud.

I love this story, though. Yeah, Hal adores attention, doesn't he? But only if it's on his terms. That's probably why Hal's "sidekicks" over the years have been either grounded civilians (Tom) or little alien starfish-buggies that can't talk back (Itty).

That second panel ... Wow. They shared a moment. A stolen glance between friends. The unrequited love of fellow adventurers...

And, based on the next panel, it lasted for minutes. Freeze frame that panel in your head for a few...

Wow.

Hal is sort of the Paris Hilton of Green Lanterns. He practically doesn't exist, unless he's the center of attention. I do love Hal, but he is SUCH an attention whore.

And yes, that's quite a kodak moment between Hal and Barry. Hal has just the hint of a smirk.

I think there are a lot of good reasons why Hal doesn't/shouldn't have his own sidekick.
