THIS is why I love Comics

I'm going to take a brief break from the mocking of Green Arrow, for an important announcement. Yesturday was Wednesday, which means that the new books are out, and like the lemming that we are, we all scurry to our local Comic Book Stores and greedily snap them up. My standard practice, is to then settle down with some lunch, some good music, and go and visit my little slice of Heaven for a few hours.

So, this week was a pretty darned good week. Green Lantern came out and boy was IT great. There were some other goodies as well. And the final issue of the 6-part Black Adam miniseries came out. It has been written by Peter Tomasi, and drawn by the incomparable Doug Mahnke. It's been a bit on the violent side, has a lot of twists and turns, and all in all has been a darned good read. It has also touched on a point that arose back in 52, when at the end, Black Adam went bonkers and fought everybody, and Captain Marvel finally managed to defeat him, by taking away his magic word. Shazam no longer worked, and Captain Marvel was pretty darned well convinced that poor Black Adam would NEVER EVER figure out the new word that he had given him.

Which is what makes THIS such a work of complete mad and utter genius.

silly

It...it looks like a Norman Rockwell painting. With a twist. This has just taken its place as one of the most perfect moments in comicbookdom. It's as good as the bit where Max Lord's nose goes "sploot" in the Martian Manhunter book where Beetle and Booster steal J'onn's cookies.

A book ALSO drawn by Doug Mahnke.

There's more to the issue of course. Adam gets royally screwed by Faust, who isn't portrayed as an idiot for a change. There is a suitably fabulous ending, and the possibility of still more goodness even after the end. But still, this was the defining moment for me. Heck, it may be the best moment all WEEK!

Still, I do have to get a tiny bit of Green Arrow mockery in.

Oh, yes. Yesterday was just an astonishing comic book day. The Y: The Last Man finale was just the tip of the iceberg!

This week I'm only buying Suburban Glamour#3 and Mighty Avengers. Just spent $40 on shipping for a toy (Sweden is a far way away...) so I'm already way over budget as far as popular culture goes.

Shoot. New books were delayed due to the snow, but I was a couple weeks down already, so it works out.

Which one was the magic word? The phrase "Chocolate egg cream"? Because that seems like a cheat, to make Adam's magic word more than one, although that would keep him from just reading the dictionary until he hit upon it. Luckily, Billy's too nice to make Adam's magic word something like "I'm impotent!" Nice page, though.

I thought the new magic word was "sorry". Or were they just messing with our minds over in Countdown?

Hmm. Sometimes to ask the question is to know the answer.

Aryyne, they were just messing with us. In the Black Adam mini-series, he'd been able to leach power from Isis' corpse, by saying her name, but it turns out that "Chocolate Egg Cream" is the REAL new word...or in this case, words.

It actually was a pretty clever idea on Billy's part. Too bad for him that Adam is equally clever. I also REALLY hope that they don't change it back to Shazam or anything, because the thought of Black Adam running around shouting "Chocolate Egg Cream!" at the top of his lungs, just delights me.

Although the "I'm impotent" is hilarious as well.

Sea, I blush to admit that I've never read Y:the last man. I've heard that it's very good, just haven't gotten around to it.

As much as I liked the previous idea that Black Adam's new word was "sorry", this scene is amazing and completely trumps everything else ever. Black Adam just looks so fond in that last panel! Chocolate egg creams--that's exactly why I read comics.

Now I'm regretting not picking up this series as it came out. Because I'm sure the trade isn't coming out five minutes ago and that's when I want it. Oh, Black Adam, why did I forsake you?

(And thank you so much for sharing this, Sally!)

It's amazing how he doesn't look evil or mean in the panel but simply smug and almost fond of his adversary and his innocence

Clearly, you don't understand the subtleties of "Ding Dong Ditch". :P

And i second the need to read Y: The Last Man! It's incredibly awesome and that last issue was . . . well, damn near perfect.

Faust commenting "Chocolate Egg Cream indeed" cracked my up as well
