Guy and Bea...sittin' in a Tree...

...k i s s i n g! Yes, it's true, Guy and Bea DID date for a while after Tora got iced, and when he was Warrior. Some people may deny this of course, but some people don't believe in the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus and Independant Voters. They DO exist!

It is my firm belief that Bea at least had a mad love/hate thing going on with Guy for years, and vice versa. However very little ever came of it, with the exception of a few wild rescues and such during their JLI days. However, you all recall of course that madcap Christmas Eve party at Warrior's, when Bea got completely swacked on the spiked eggnog, and she and Guy started snogging wildly, under the mistletoe. Then things got really out of hand, and presumably an interesting evening ensued.

And that was that. A one-night stand.

Except, the two of them started peeking sheepishly at each other whenever they ran across each other for quite some time after that. Bea keeps suggesting that he call her sometime in her best Mae West imitation, and Guy's eyes would cross, and then something would blow up and they'd have to postpone their discussion to the next time.

Smooth Guy. Smooth. This actually went on for quite some time.

Even Bea can't quite believe it. And she's...blushing! That's just so cute! I always assumed that Bea had forgotten how to blush around the age of twelve or so. Guy on the other hand, blushes all the time, the big lug.

And finally, in the last issue of JLA, at least for a while, there was this.

So it's canon. It's true. It really happened. And I really really REALLy hope that somehow this gets brought up in Green Lantern Corps, because I think it would be quite...interesting. I also assume that somewhere, Snapper Carr has pictures. Then rather suddenly, they weren't together anymore, which is a story that also needs to be told somewhere, because they were certainly on the outs by the time that the OMAC story by Rucka came out. I used to think that Rucka was just writing them out of character, but when you think about it, I suppose that it makes perfect sense for Guy to be all snarky and obnoxious if he got dumped shortly beforehand. It could even help explain why he was so rude to Wonder Woman.

It is amazing, the mental gymnastics that I am able to perform.

I think the second panel of the second scan is the closest Bea ever comes to outright admitting a crush on Tora, actually. Between the "not wanting to lose her" and the italics on the word "man" in the last sentence -- "More than I've ever felt for a man" -- I think we've pretty much crossed out of the realm of subtext.

And then there's Sigrid pretty much admitting the same thing about Bea. Who's dating Guy. Who used to date Tora. It's all very awkward and wacky! Those later issues of JLA have very little to recommend them, but I have to admit that I loved the sexual tension. Todd and Albert had their issues, too.

I bet Guy and Bea were a really fun couple, and I wish we got to actually see them together (and that more recent writers weren't ignoring the fact that they were together). As much as he loved Tora, I think he would have been more comfortable around Bea in some ways -- maybe he would feel less like he had to be on good behavior and more like he could be a little bad and raunchy and get away with it. With Tora out of the picture, I think Bea would relax more around him, too, and not be so critical, and maybe appreciate that side of him more (because let's face it, she's a bad girl). When all is said and done, they actually have quite a lot in common.

What I wouldn't give to see them all written together in a book (be it guest appearances in GLC or a mini or whatever) by someone who actually knows the characters enough to pick up on all this stuff and deal with it!

Also, Bea and Guy's break-up story: I'm working on it. Though I'd still rather see what "officially" happened. Maybe, if whatever Bea and Tora are talking about doing ends up actually happening, the subject will come up.

I just wanna know what's up with Bea's legs in that last panel. Hyperextended right knee and broken left tibia and fibula looks like to me. She might want to get that looked at.

Jordan -- you know what I think is hilarious about the poses in that last scan? Guy is definitely the girl there.

But ow, yeah. The during that era sucked bad. The panel where Bea is blushing looks more like someone (Sigrid, in a jealous fit of rage?)punched her in the face.

Oh, my! Who was writing the Justice League back then? Dan Vado? Dan Jurgens? :-s I kind of wrote those stories out of my brain. When Giffen and DeMatteis left the book, the "fun" kept going, only it wasn't funny anymore.

So sad. So sad.

Sad clown, actually.

Weren't these the Gerard Jones issues of JLA? They were a little on the freaky side, but I actually rather enjoyed them. The sexual tension was just RIFE in that particular time period!

Of course, I also admit to rather liking Wonder Woman's biker shorts, and the time that she, Guy, and Hawkman all went off to fight the Tormocks. Big stupid rip-snorting adventure!

The same Gerard Jones who wrote Hal and Guy's Adventures in Violent Manlove Land (aka early GL v. 3), yes. And G'nort's rather weird crush on Guy that somehow manages to be both adorable and disturbing (much like Guy himself).

Even if he did make Hal meaner than usual, I think he did a pretty good job with Guy and John as characters. And I really disliked the main storylines during his run on JLA, but the character-driven subplots were pretty good. In particular: Albert's passive homophobia (a much more realistic take on how many people feel than the usual take comics go for), Todd struggling with his sexuality, Albert and Bea breaking up for religious reasons (comics should deal with this more often), Bea and Sigrid's screwed-up relationship, etc. The mutual respect between Guy and Diana was also very nice.

Gerard Jones really doesn't get enough credit, because most of his stories rank amongst my favorites. He DID do a fabulous job with Guy and John. He also made Hal a real jerk, which was rather refreshing, and look at the wonderful things that Geoff Johns has been able to do with it since then!

God, I love comics.
