"John Stewart is the Coolest Green Lantern on Earth Because...!

John's not the most flamboyant, nor the noisiest, nor the handsomest, nor even the cutest. He IS the Coolest however, primarily because...well...he actually KEEPS his cool! He's the one who is thinking, the one who remains calm and collected. The one who takes out the sniper, while those around him are losing their heads...in some cases, literally.

John Stewart

John is the Coolest, because right from the start, he never saw a need to wear a mask or hide who he was. He worked as hard at being a Green Lantern as he did at being an architect. Architecture has been described as "frozen Poetry", something that I thinks describes John very well.

John is the Coolest, because in spite of all the ridiculous things that the writers have done to him over the years in an largely unneccesary effort to make him more "interesting", he's gotten through all the tragedy and angst with his aplomb more or less intact.

And John is the Coolest, because...well...

I don't REALLY have to say more, do I?

Who else thinks that John is the Coolest?

John is the COOLEST Green Lantern because ...

- He's not afraid to admit he loves Streisand (I'll bet he listens to Prince, too!).

- He likes Cirque du Soleil (in one comic, he had tickest to see Zumanity in Vegas!).

- He's not a glory hound. He doesn't NEED attention or others to acknowledge his greatness. He just wants to get the job done in the best way possible.

I don't think I've ever read anything with John in it! Do you have any recs?

Most recently, John has been appearing regularly in the Justice League of America comic -- upcoming issues of which are penned by current Green Lantern writer Geoff Johns.

Historically, John has been (arguably) at his best in the short-lived '90s comic book series Green Lantern: Mosaic, and also as a regular in the Justice League animated TV series (2001-2004).

I'm not the GL authority Sally is, but to the best of my knowledge John has never undergone any significant retcons, which has to count for something these days. His life has changed over time, but he's never lost big chunks of continuity.

Then again, I still count the whole Parallax thing as being a retcon in disguise, so what do I know? Hal as an overstressed madman set to rewrite the universe and recreate the ones he loved was a fine tragedy and a good story. Hal as the unsuspecting mental puppet of a heretofore unknown yellow space bug? Not so much.

If you ever get the chance to pick up Mosaic, do so, it was a really superbly written comic book, by Gerard Jones, back in the day, when Hal was slowly going off his rocker, and Guy was nuttier than a fruitcake, and Kyle wasn't even a gleam in Ron Marz's eye.

Yeah, John is pretty cool. He likes what he likes, and he's not apologetic about it.
