Oh Hal

Hal gets hit in the head. A lot. We all know it. We all enjoy it. And apparently, it all began quite early in his Green Lanterning career. And since this sort of thing doesn't simply spring out of nowhere, I imagine that he was a spectacularly clumsy child as well.

Hal Pictures

This is Hal's first encounter with "yellow" during his training on Oa, as chronicled in the recent Green Lantern issues, by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis. Let's just say that Kilowog found it to be HIGHLY amusing...and thereby setting a precedent for us all.

So what do we make of the fact that all the buildings in the background of that picture are yellow?

Is is a sign of foresight by the Guardians? "Hmm, some of our recruits might be hot-headed. Best to make sure they can't damage our homes if they start squabbling."

Or is it that they enjoy mocking their Lanterns? You're Hal (might want to smash your head against a desk to assume the proper mindset. You just got popped in the face by a yellow, um, dinner plate, discus, something. You feel humiliated, and you look up and see yellow all around you, reminding you of what you're powerless against.

To Hal's credit, that's apretty nice hand he whipped up with the ring, for a rookie.

So, in current continuity would this be the first head-bashing Hal recieves in uniform, the start of the grand tradition that continues to this day?

James, Hal believed in getting things started with a bang.

Calvin, oddly enough, that very point is brought up by Hal, when he is busy yelling at the Guardians on his very first day...thereby also establishing a tradition with him...rank insubordination.

But yes, at least back in the old days, the buildings were all yellow on Oa...presumably so that an errant shot by a rookie wouldn't blow the place up. I guess the Guardians got tired of janitorial duty all the time.

I believe Sinestro supposedly brought up the same point when he was a rookie -- or at least a similar point in accusing the Guardians of putting the yellow weakness there on purpose. I'm sure he was secretly very proud of Hal for noticing.

I suppose making the buildings yellow did make it easier to keep it all from crashing down around their heads because of a stray blast, but I'm sure it was also because the Guardians always secretly feared their Green Lanterns turning on them the way the Manhunters did.

Poor Hal. He gets some pretty bad wallops, but that one really looks like it hurt bad. That's why you don't mess with the 'Wog!

Sally, it just occurred to me that Hal got pretty banged up in Brave and Bold #134. I suspect that Dwayne would have trouble matching Hal's adventure behind the Iron Curtain.

Oh Jonah just gets whacked with rocks, gun butts and cudgels...and probably gets dragged through cactus patches a lot. Hal on the other hand gets aliens beating him up, stray asteroids, toy planes and yellow ceiling tiles, not to mention his own ring.

Frankly, I think that Hal has the edge.
