Blackest Night: Green Arrow #30

I am of course, getting most of the Blackest Night cross-overs...or at least the ones that feature characters that I like. And I like Ollie, even though he's a bigger jerk than Hal even.

But I simply couldn't resist this cover.

So...so perfect.

The story follows pretty much the same ground as most of the other similar issues. Ollie is trapped inside his body, as Nekron has taken over, and he's doing and say some pretty awful things. But the art is pretty, and Conner and Mia show up along with Dinah, which is nice. And of course, in the end, Ollie is able to...just for a moment...overcome the Ring's conditioning and think of a way to save his loved ones. And it's actually pretty cool.

I also find it interesting that out of all the things that have happened to him, the worst day of his life was when he thought he killed a Parallax-possessed Hal. Not to mention Kyle, who was right behind him, but in typical Ollie fashion, he never mentions that he also may have killed an innocent kid. But I digress. It's a nice character study, and I'm always happy with those.

The other day, I was being quite cranky about the fact that practically everyone on that cover with Nekron, had had their own book...with the exception of Ice. I am now pleased to report that they were obviously saving the BEST for last.

Oh, it's going to be epic.

She's pretty even when she's dead! I'm sort of scared of what things she's going to say to Guy, though. And I'll bet, of all the Black Lanterns, Tora will be the one who feels the most regret for whatever she does say.

Though Ollie sure will feel pretty awful, I'll bet. Black Lantern Ollie was brutal, and I really enjoyed that book because of that raw edge.

Considering how sweet Tora normally is, it is going to be interesting to see what she can come up with, after being possessed by and evil Death entity.

But yes, she's quite gorgeous here. I do have to say that practically all of the Blackest Night costumes have been pretty snazzy. Tora looks good in black!

But considering all the garbage that both Guy and Fire have subjected her to over the years, I'm assuming that there's going to be a little bit of payback!

given their poses i think that guy most resembles the black lantern - he looks like he's gonna take a chunk out of Ice.

GA was rather good.

Green Arrow WAS pretty good! My God, but Ollie is an asshole, but at least in this instance, it's against his will. And I'm sure that the rest of them realize that it's not REALLY Ollie who is saying those awful awful things, and yet...it still has to hurt.

So I would imagine that it would hurt even more when a sweetie-pie like Tora starts ripping you to shreds verbally.

I loved the Green Arrow issue. It was a fabulous character study of a LOT of the characters. I thought Mia, in particular, handled Ollie's transformation VERY well, even better than Dinah.

I'm also thrilled that, unlike most of the other Blackest Night tie-ins, this one is actually an official issue of the overall Green Arrow title. It's actually GA #30, not "Blackest Night GA #1." I wish DC had done that with ALL of the tie-ins.

It doesn't surprise me that Ollie would consider killing Hal the worst day of his life. Remember what happened when Ollie accidently killed someone way back in Flash #217 (1973)? That's when he almost went off the deep end -- and THAT was over killing a total stranger. To then go through that with Ollie's best friend ...! No wonder Ollie allowed himself to die in that plane explosion, and forbade Superman to save him. Ollie had already gone through a lot; having to "kill" Hal was no doubt the final straw. Ollie became close to suicidal after that.

Mia is awesome. She proves it with almost every appearance, and she's exceptionally sensible and capable here. In fact, I might have to post someday about how she's probably a better female role model than most of the more famous DC heroines are.

It actually sort of hurt the most when Ollie -- the real Ollie, in his head -- said that Roy was the "best" Speedy. Ouch. Seriously. Ouch. He might not have said it out loud, but it was the real Ollie saying his real feelings, and giving Roy perhaps a little too much credit.

I mean, I like Roy and all, don't get me wrong, but... Mia!

Mia IS awesome, and I like her very much. But on the other hand, I guess I can understand Ollie thinking that Roy was the best Speedy. He WAS the first after all, and he and Ollie have been through a lot. There's also the whole "My sidekick is a junkie!" business. That wasn't ALL Ollie's fault of course, but he does have to feel ashamed of his role in it.

I'm very fond of Ollie...but a rolemodel he is not.

That "worst day of his life" spiel made Real Ollie sound like a real dick, IMHO. Consider all the crap that's happened to his wife and his present/former sidekicks, like Dinah's "Longbow Hunters" ordeal, Roy's maiming, and Connor's brushes with death. Plus, his home city just got destroyed. And after all that, SHOOTING HAL was Ollie's worst day? Nice priorities, Goatee-Man! Roy's maiming and Star City's destruction had JUST HAPPENED, for Pete's sake.

i think that ollie should take a lot of the respnsibility for roy getting a smack habit. ok, he didn't force roy to shoot up but it was pretty clear that the detioriation in their relationship was a major contributor to roy picking up a needle in the first place.

I've always been of the opinion that Ollie loves Hal more than anyone else. It's the main reason why Ollie picks on Hal more than anyone else.

Of course, Hal doesn't feel the same way about Ollie. Ollie has too much competition: Hal's love for himself. :-)
