Just for the Heck of It

It's Wednesday, and I am going to be off to the Comic Book Store, and just for the heck of it, I decided to post this.

Chris Samnee is a genius.

And man, do I miss Ralph and Sue.

I second that. I will loathe Brad Meltzer forever for what he did. Hack.

I just finished a re-read of Starman. James Robinson wrote them so well.

Seriously, does ANYONE dislike Ralph and Sue?

Of course, they were happily married, and fun characters in and of themselves. We can't have that sort of thing in the new DC.

I think Brad Meltzer got carte blanche for "Identity Crisis" because he was an established novelist. If only some other best-sellng novelist had taken an interest in comics at the same time...I could see Nora Roberts or Janet Evanovich having fun writing a Ralph and Sue mystery story.

Brad Meltzer did a wonderful job when he was writing the Green Arrow book, but Identity Crisis was horrible. I think he had a cool idea for a mystery, something that would work only with super-powered characters, so he wrote to the gimmick of the story instead of the characters. The mystery mattered more to him than what he was doing to beloved characters. Sure, he wrote good characterization when it came to Ralph's pain and so on, but that was just to serve the plot. Someone should have told him he had a cool idea, but he can't kill off fan favorites like that and he couldn't do what he did to Sue retroactively, so he'll have to come up with something else. But no one did. The PTB at DC let him do it.

Shelly, I think you have hit the nail on the head. He didn't create these characters, he didn't really care about these characters, except as a way to tell his story.

Damn.
